Existing and forecasted challenges for cavity-nesters

Western Bluebirds by Peggy Honda

The Southern California Bluebird Club and the Cavity Conservation Initiative have a complimentary mission.  The first focuses on providing nest boxes for cavity-nesters, and the second advocates for the safe retention of dead trees which provide vital nesting habitat for these birds.

After 20 years of providing nest boxes to stem the decline of bluebirds and others, we thought it time to ask some new questions to guide future conservation efforts.  A three-month scientific literature review was conducted.  Some interesting information and perspectives were discovered and presented to our membership.  Attached is a video of that presentation.

If you want to know what climate change may have in store for some cavity-nesters, if  you are interested in the benefits of and lessons learned about nest boxes (particularly for bluebirds), this information and more can be found in the attached video which was created primarily for a Southern California audience.  Some content is therefore regionally focused.
